Dave Cole

Beginning as a small-scale live steam hobbyist in the late 1990s, Dave Cole is the editor of Steam in the Garden magazine. He has built two live-steam railroads and owns a variety of live-steam locomotives and rolling stock. Though some claim to have seen him actually operate a live-steam locomotive, this is probably just a nasty rumor.

Cole has detailed much about his live-steam enthusiasm at the web site 45mm.com, where builds of his two railroads are documented. He lives in Pacifica, Calif., just outside San Francisco.

He edited the newsletter of the Bay Area Garden Railway Society from 2000-2006, was the editor of the 2006 National Garden Railway Convention magazine and has been an organizer with the National Summer Steamup since its founding in 2001.

In “real life,” Cole has been a journalist since the early 1970s and has been an editor at magazines and newspapers, including Rolling Stone and Hearst’s San Francisco Examiner (where he worked from 1977-1989, rising to become assistant managing editor). He co-founded a quarterly non-profit magazine in 1974 and continued to edit it through 1983. He owns the weekly business-to-business newsletter NewsInc. and is a consultant to print and new media publishers.
